About The Area

Nieu Bethesda is perfectly placed for a stop-over between Johannesburg and Cape Town. Driving into the valley through the Sneeuberg mountains is inspiring. The village is 56 kms from Graaff Reinet, the Karoo town known as “the gem of the Karoo.”

In Nieu Bethesda itself, it is pleasant to spend an afternoon visiting the quirky craft shops, the Owl House, and the Fossil Museum. The Valley of Desolation, an area of spectacular beauty, is a forty-five minute drive from the Centre. Compassberg, dominating Nieu Bethesda, is the highest peak in South Africa outside the Drakensberg. Climbing its peak is a wonderful day-trip from Nieu Bethesda for lovers of mountains.
